New chemical technology produces super-high air flow flexible foams, wide range of applications

Bayer MaterialScience LLC at Polyurethanes Technical Conference 2011

 Nashville, Tenn., September 27, 2011 — A foam mattress’s “cool” feel is directly linked to flexible polyurethane foam’s porosity. Porosity also contributes to lower compression sets and better durability of cushioning products.

Currently, most high porosity foams are produced by a chemical or mechanical reticulation process that involves an extra, post-step treatment to enhance the air flow. This has limited the use of these foams to mostly specialty and moderate volume applications.

Bayer Research Fellow Stanley Hager will discuss “New Chemical Technology for the Production of Super-High Air Flow Flexible Foams” this week at the Polyurethanes Technical Conference sponsored by the Center for the Polyurethanes Industry. A poster presentation of the paper will also be available for review during the conference. Susan McVey, manager, Flexible Slabstock Applications Development Group, and a co-author of the paper, will be available during certain viewing periods to answer questions. The conference is being held Sept. 26 – 28 in Nashville, Tenn.

Other co-authors of the paper include: Micah Moore, senior research and development specialist; Peter Uthe, senior associate scientist; Jack Reese, manager, Polyether Process Development Group; and Scott Skolnekovich, senior slabstock marketing representative; all of Bayer MaterialScience LLC.

Hager will detail the benefits of new polyether polyol and formulation technology to produce very high air flow polyurethane without reticulation. In addition to high air flow above 5.0 scfpm, the technology offers control of foam recovery rates and surface characteristics, thus facilitating a wide range of end-use applications.

The new technology from Bayer is particularly well-suited for the production of soft foam grades between 3 and 20 pounds IFD. Various commercially available MDIs or TDI can be employed in the process.

Hager will also detail tests indicating the grade range of foams produced using these new formulations and their potential performance in end-use applications, such as bedding, seating, and other cushioning where air circulation and transfer of moisture away from the body are beneficial performance traits.
